Abstract

This research tests the hypothesis that the positive correlation between stature and environmental conditions becomes stronger as the spatial scale of the analysis increases. Notably, the early modern population was shorter than the medieval population. However, this difference became clearly apparent only when subsamples from different locations were combined into two larger samples according to the chronological principle: “medieval” and “early modern”. Furthermore, changes in the stature of the Middle Dnipro population align with the general European trend of a decrease in stature from the Medieval to the Early Modern period, which has been attributed to climatic changes during the Little Ice Age.
